A REAL SANKOFA EXPERIENCE

Enjoy reading Back In The Day, which has a more detailed, comprehensive legacy of Payne’s church life, videos and community outreach history. Filled with historical family pictures, photos of interviewees born in the early 1900’s, documents and church life photos of long ago.

Back In The Day is a step in the process, a glimpse of what African American pioneers accomplished in the wild-wild west of the territory of Colorado Springs, Colorado by founding and building the first church community for people of color in 1872.

Research, networking, many documentations, collaborations with The Black History Museum of Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak Library District Special Collections, Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum and in-person interviews with pioneer descendants has created a rich, oral historical treasure.

Back in The Day is a real Sankofa experience—moving forward in life, while remembering, appreciating and applying the lessons learned from the past.
